On Wednesday, January 22nd, all teachers of honors courses at both the Newton-Conover High School (NCHS) and Discovery High School met at NCHS to discuss upcoming requirements for teaching these courses in the future. At this meeting, teachers were introduced to online resources to begin reflecting on their honors implementation portfolio and the rubric now required by the state. Teachers were directed to the NCCS Compass Wiki site (below) for these resources.
In April of 2013, the North Carolina Department of Instruction (DPI) announced that public schools across the state would be involved in a three cohort process for Honors Course Rubric Implementation. All teachers that teach or will teach “honors” level courses will create a portfolio and narrative to validate that the courses they teach have a rigor above standard courses of the same title with regard to content, instruction, and assessment. Teachers have been asked to review all the resources on the wiki site and contribute questions to the portal so that the district curriculum team can begin to pose these questions to DPI for better preparation in this new process.
This past school year (2013-14), one third of the districts across the state, identified by DPI as the first cohort in all regions, have been working on their courses in preparation for submission in March, 2014. The second cohort districts have not yet been released by DPI but, Newton-Conover City Schools will be ready with resources already in place.
