Beginning on April 5th, ESL students in grades 2-5 will have the opportunity to attend ESL Saturday Academy. The students will attend the academy at North Newton Elementary School on April 5th, April 12th, May 3rd, May 10th, and May 17th. Each Saturday session will last from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. The focus of the five sessions will be science and general academic vocabulary, with a high priority on Tier 2 words and phrases to enrich the students’ vocabulary.
What are Tier 2 words? Tier 2 words are the words that are less familiar, but useful vocabulary that is found in written text. These words are often the words used in conversations between students and their teachers. The Common Core State Standards refers to these as “general academic words.” Sometimes they are referred to as “rich vocabulary.” These words are more precise or subtle forms of familiar words and include multiple meaning words. Instead of walk for example, saunter could be used. These words are found across a variety of domains.
There is a direct link between vocabulary and reading comprehension. The more vocabulary words the student understands, the more likely it is that the student will comprehend the text being read. The ESL Saturday Academy will help to address Tier 2 vocabulary words with the ESL students.
