Fit and Healthy in Elementary School

This spring, South Newton Elementary celebrated healthy, active lifestyles for girls by creating the Fit, Active, Strong Tigers Club.  Open to 4th and 5th grade girls, the club met once per week to enjoy a healthy snack, participate in a lesson regarding healthy living, and then engage in a fitness activity.  Each week, lessons focused on various aspects of overall wellness, such as nutrition, hygiene, effective communication skills, perseverance, and stress management.

To celebrate the completion of the club, the Fit, Active, Strong Tigers participated in a Girl Power Fun Run/5K on Saturday, May 17, 2014.  The run also included the “Girls on the Go” club from North Newton Elementary and “Fit, Active, Beautiful” club from Shuford Elementary.  Parents and staff were also invited, and were asked to bring a canned food item to support a local family.  Approximately 100 people attended the event to encourage the girls’ efforts to live a healthy, active lifestyle.  The Girl Power Fun Run/5K was a tremendous success and the elementary schools look forward to offering the event again next year!
