Discovery High School Continues Science Olympiad Success at State Competition

IMG_4339Discovery High School (DHS) attended the Hickory Regional Science Olympiad Tournament held at CVCC on March 22, 2014. At that time, DHS placed third overall in the regional competition with 6 Gold medals, 2 Silver and 3 Bronze.  As a result, placing 3rd out of the 19 teams, DHS was now eligible to advance to the State Tournament at NC State University on April 25-26. At that competition, the team placed 22nd out of 48 teams competing at the state level.  DHS was well represented in the awards presentations with top-ten medals in six out of the 24 events; two 3rd place events, one 5th place event, one 6th place event, one 8th place event and one 9th place event.  The DHS team placed ahead of all other Catawba County and Hickory Region schools competing in the state tournament.   The medal events results for DHS were:  Stuck on Science, 3rd Patrick McPherson, Carly Krajak  and Thomas Colton;  Green Generation, 3rd , Thomas Colton and Carly Krajak;  Boomilever – 5th   Will Kennedy and Patrick McPherson;  Water Quality, 6th  ,Thomas Colton and Stephen Bechtel;  Dynamic Planet, 8th ,Turner Glynn and Stephen Bechtel;  Write it, Do it,  9th ,Carly Krajak  and Thomas Colton.

Congratulations to these very bright and competitive students as they made a name for themselves along with Coach Highberg at these competitions!!!   Below:  Carly, Thomas and Patrick were invited to lead the 2,000 students in the “competitor’s pledge” during the opening ceremonies as a result of the “splash” made by their STUCK ON TAPE Suspension Bridge.
