Using Big 6 for Quality Information Seeking

libraryOur district official uses the research model of the Big 6 for students seeking information.  Big 6 is a 6 step process.  The components are:

  1. Task Definition
  2. Information Seeking Strategies
  3. Location and Access
  4. Use of Information
  5. Synthesis
  6. Evaluation

Through this process students learn the step by step skills needed to find quality information that fits what they are looking for.   The Big Six website ( has information on how to implement the process, as well as free handouts and research on the program.

The Big 6 process can be used with upper elementary grades as well as middle and high school.  Dr. Emily S. Harris, a middle school teacher in South Carolina, conducted action research on teaching 6th graders the process.  Her article lists the sequence of lessons as well as student results and conclusions.
