On Friday, November 7th, over 110 Kiwanis Terrific Kids, 5 Teachers of the Year, and one Principal of the Year were recognized at the Newton-Conover High School Football game. Students from Conover School, North Newton Elementary, Shuford Elementary, and South Newton Elementary Schools were honored on Friday night for being selected as TERRIFIC KIDS, an honor that teachers awarded to select students for the first quarter of the 2014-2015 school year!
Terrific Kids is a student-recognition program through the Kiwanis Club that promotes character development, self-esteem and perseverance.
“Terrific” is an acronym for Thoughtful, Enthusiastic, Respectful, Responsible, Inclusive, Friendly, Inquisitive and Capable. Students work with their classroom teacher to establish goals to improve behavior, peer relationships, attendance, or school work. All students who achieve their goals after a specified time are recognized as Terrific Kids.
At the break after the first quarter, all of the Terrific Kids in N-CCS had the chance to be escorted to the middle of the field, where they were acknowledged from the press box. The students’ specific names were listed in the program that was handed out at the game.
At the break after the third quarter, all of the Teachers of the Year (TOYs) in N-CCS had the chance to be escorted to the middle of the field, where they were acknowledged from the press box. The TOYs from Conover School (Eileen Cangemi), North Newton Elementary (Rachel Fulbright), Shuford Elementary (Julianne Surratte), Newton-Conover Middle School (Charles Draper), and South Newton Elementary (Christy Buff–also N-CCS Teacher of the Year) were honored on Friday night for being awarded their titles as role models for students and staff members in their buildings. The Principal of the Year for Newton-Conover City Schools, Mrs. Julia Styers from South Newton, was also honored for her excellence in leadership! It was a great night to say, “We are Newton-Conover!”
N-CCS Athlectic Director, Angelo Palozzi, plans to partner with N-CCS staff to acknowledge other students and staff members during the upcoming N-CHS basketball season.
