Roman_Gabriel_7_imageOn Tuesday, November 18th, Roman Gabriel III spoke to all 7th grade students at Newton-Conover Middle School and the 9th grade students at Newton-Conover High School and Discovery High School in a program called Sold Out. Sold Out is a drug and alcohol abstinence program designed to present students with the facts about substance abuse and provide students with positive alternatives. The presentation opened with a high-energy video involving multiple video clips of famous athletes stating that they are drug/alcohol free and why they chose to live this way. The video was followed by an engaging talk given by Roman Gabriel III, in which he imparted encouragement and motivation, as well as offered support through his website:
At the end of the presentation, students were invited to take the Sold Out Pledge in which students committed to remaining drug and alcohol abstinent. The unique nature of the Sold Out program is the ongoing support and encouragement students can receive by visiting the Sold Out website, utilizing the video resources, and interacting with the Sold Out staff through a variety of social media outlets. Newton-Conover City Schools is planning to partner further with Sold Out and host a “pre-prom” assembly for 11th and 12th grade students, as well as an assembly for our 5th grade students, to help prepare them for decisions that they need to be ready to make to remain drug and alcohol abstinent in the future.
Roman Gabriel III played quarterback at the University of New Mexico and played in both the National Football League and the United States Football League. He is the son of Roman Gabriel II, once a star North Carolina State University quarterback who has been enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame. He also was a 4-time Pro Bowl selection in the National Football League.
