On Thursday, January 29th, Priscilla Palmisano, Assistant Principal at Conover School, presented at the 28th Annual Conference for Exceptional Children in Pinehurst, NC. Mrs. Palmisano presented on the newly implemented Teacher Assistant (TA) Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) process at Conover School, a public separate school for students with moderate to severe disabilities. The presentation consisted of information pertaining to creating a community of collaboration and shared learning among the 34 Teacher Assistants at Conover School. Agenda items such as reading pertinent literature, establishing group norms, sharing best practices, and focusing on hot topics of interest (based on TA climate survey results) shape the monthly PLC meetings and allow TAs to learn from experts, as well as each other. Current special education teachers, administrators, and pre-service teachers, as well as special education support staff from across the state, attended the session to gain ideas on how to support paraprofessional staff in their school environments. N-CCS was proud to be represented by Mrs. Palmisano at this exceptional children’s state initiative.
