In January, students were inducted into the Tri-M Music Honor Society. This event and celebration make the second year for the induction of our students. The program is monitored by Ms. Elizabeth Fowler and Mr. Haskew Smith, both teachers of Newton Conover High School. The guest speaker was Mrs. Tammy Shook, highly respected and now retired music teacher from Catawba County Schools. She spoke very highly of the students inducted and also of the addition of Tri-M to Newton-Conover’s list of honors.
The Tri-M Music Honor Society is the international music honor society for high school music students. It is designed to recognize students for their academic and musical achievements, reward them for their accomplishments and service activities, and to inspire other students to excel at music and leadership.
So what does it take to be a Tri-M member? Eligibility for Tri-M includes a minimum 3.0 weighted GPA, a 4.0 GPA in all music courses, and enrollment in at least one music course each school year. All members are required to complete ten hours of community service through community performances and tutoring at various elementary schools. Senior members are also required to participate in the honor’s recital at the end of the school year and will receive a Tri-M cord to wear at graduation.
