Are you interested in competitive sports? How about competitive games? And, what are your thoughts on competitive GROUP games? If any of this interests you, then you must come be a part of the Newton-Conover Education Foundation’s Ninth Annual Red Hot Spelling Bee, brought to us this year by the Observer News Enterprise and Outlook! This bee is one of two annual fund-raisers for the organization that helps to provide student scholarships and classroom grants to the Newton-Conover City Schools System.
Sharp spelling skills help when it comes to NeCoEdFo’s annual Red Hot Spelling Bee, but they are not required! Participants only need enough money to get their team to the championship round, as they can purchase “buy-backs” when missing a word causes the team to be eliminated. The more monetary support a team has to purchase “buy-backs”, the more potential the team has for winning the bee! “Buy-backs” are allowed until the championship round, when remaining teams rally against one another for the victory. Of course, the team works together to spell the word, as well, so there are multiple ways to be successful in this game! Everyone will want to contend for the Red Hot Spelling Bee travel trophy that the winners keep for a year. Last year’s winners for the adult category were members of the Shuford Elementary Staff, and the winners for the student category were students from North Newton Elementary School.
Another exciting part of the evening is the team costume contest! Every team is encouraged to come to the event with a team costume theme and a name for their team! With costume-clad participants on the floor and an audience laughing and cheering in the stands, there’s definitely a festive atmosphere at this annual event. Everyone involved enjoys the evening–especially the participants! Admission is free for all who would like to attend!
The money raised from this event, as well as the Nests for Knowledge Bird House Auction, is used to provide additional funding for teachers who are initiating innovative approaches in the classroom. This money is also used to provide scholarships for seniors who have shown community involvement as well as pride in the Newton-Conover school system. By supporting this fund raising event, you are helping to provide resources for N-CCS’s finest students and staff members! Complete details are provided on the entry form. Registrations are due by Monday, April 13th. Teams who submit their entry forms by Thursday, April 2nd will receive one free “buy-back”! Money and entry forms should be sent to Dr. Betsy Rosenbalm at the N-CCS Central Office at 605 N. Ashe Ave, Newton, NC 28658. Checks can be made out to Newton-Conover Education Foundation.
