Selected musicians from Catawba County high schools met and rehearsed Thursday and Friday, March 26-27, at Maiden High School. These talented students were part of the All County Honor Bands who performed a concert Friday evening, March 27th. These students auditioned for a seat in the Honor Wind Ensemble or the Symphonic Band and the chance to work with accomplished band directors from the area. Mr. Bob Buckner, retired Associate Director of Bands from Western Carolina University, directed the Wind Ensemble and Mr. Rodney Workman, Director of Bands from Central Davidson Middle School, directed the Symphonic Band. Nine Newton-Conover students were selected to perform in the Wind Ensemble and Twenty-four Newton-Conover students were selected to perform in the Symphonic Band. Newton-Conover students made up 30% of the students selected to perform in the honor bands (25 out of 62 students of the Symphonic Band, and 9 out of 53 students of the Wind Ensemble!)
During the concert, N-CCS Band Director Haskew Smith was named Catawba County Band Director of the Year as voted on by Catawba County band directors. Mr. Smith has been directing bands at Newton-Conover High School and Newton-Conover Middle School since 1994. Mr. Smith lead the N-CHS Band to a Superior rating at the Music Performance Assessment held at the J. E. Broyhill Civic Center earlier this month.
