Lenoir-Rhyne University makes connections with the community with a special event each year called “The Little Read”. This year the author featured was Joyce Hostetter. All fifth grade students in our system received a copy of Blue, written by Joyce Hostetter. Blue tells a story of a young girl facing the polio epidemic that plagued Hickory in 1944. Each of the students in fifth grade participated in art and literature contests. The fifth grade teachers worked extremely hard to make sure that the students understood the background in history that was occurring during that time.
Mrs. Cierra Parker was chosen as the teacher to present her classes’ work to the author on Thursday, April 16. Check out the presentation here. The fifth grade teachers at Shuford attended this ceremony to share how they interacted with the book Blue. These teachers involved their students by having them create Facebook profiles that showcased character traits and a timeline of the main events that occurred in each character’s life.
Lenoir-Rhyne University held its annual “The Little Read” event for the community on Saturday, April 18 in the P.E. Monroe Audorium. Tori Charles was the student first place winner and was presented with a signed copy of the book Blue at the ceremony.
We are thankful that Joyce Hostetter visited our district and inspired our students to enjoy reading!
