The ESL department at North Newton has been following the Global Theme by studying about North America. For the month of October the students in K-2 read and discussed clothing, location, the people, and celebrations in Mexico. Each Friday is a culture day where the student make something from the topics covered for the week. The first week w as sombreros, second week was serapes, the next week was maracas, and finally the last project was calavera masks for Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). On October 29th everything was ready for our Dia de los Muertos celebration with cupcakes and happy conversation. Dia de los Muertos is a happy time with bright colors, flower, food, and photos of lost loved ones. It is meant as a time to remember those who have died not to mourn them. The kids enjoyed learning about the Mexican culture.
