Lilian Jones Teacher Scholarship Opportunity

New NCCS Logo  - 2012The Frank and Lilian Jones Scholarship fund has been established through an endowment with the purpose of providing scholarships to three separate groups:

  1. One third going to the Newton-Conover High School and the Discovery High School Valedictorians and Salutatorians.
  2. One third going to the top 10 eighth graders from Newton-Conover Middle School.
  3. One third dedicated for scholarships to deserving teachers under the criteria identified below:

Purpose

The Teacher Scholarship can be used for one of the following areas:

  • Higher Education
  • First attempt at each component for National Board Certification
  • Attendance at a Regional, State or National Conference to support a District initiative
  • Training to become a District-level trainer

Criteria

  • Applicant’s evaluation must be at least proficient on all standards.
  • All employees in the NCCS district that hold a NC teacher license are eligible and may submit an application

Process

  • The Frank and Lilian Jones Scholarship Committee will be comprised of the Superintendent, Personnel Director, Finance Officer, One Elementary Principal, One Secondary Principal and One EC representative (Director or Principal).
  • Up to 10 recipients may be chosen.
  • Scholarships will be awarded by Scholarship Committee in June and must be used by May 31, 2017.
  • If a teacher chooses higher education, scholarship checks will be written to the higher education agency or certificate program of the teacher’s choice once proof of successful completion of first semester has been submitted to the NCCS Finance Department. If the teacher does not enroll in a higher education agency or certificate program, they will not be eligible for the award.
  • If a teacher chooses to apply for National Board Certification, scholarship checks will be written to reimburse the employee for each component fee once proof of payment to the National Board for Professional Teacher Standards has been submitted to the NCCS Finance Department.
  • If a teacher chooses to attend a Regional/State/National Conference or to become a District-level trainer, scholarship checks will be written directly to the conference vendor or training agency of the teacher’s choice once proof of registration to the conference has been submitted to the NCCS Finance Department. If the teacher does not register, they will not be eligible for the award.
  • If cost of conference or training exceeds the cost of the scholarship, recipient will need to commit personal funding or make arrangements with their school principal to supplement the cost.
  • If cost of conference or training is less than the scholarship awarded, the non-disbursed money will be returned to the Frank and Lilian Jones Scholarship principal investment. 

Interested applicants should submit the following information to Carmen Houston on or before May 27, 2016. 

  1. Letter of support from their school principal.
  2. Letter of interest stating which of the 4 areas the applicant is applying for and the specific timeline/dates for using the money. Applicants must list their plans, including all itemized costs, for the scholarship and how it will benefit them as a professional, as well as the District.
  • Higher Education – Payment of the scholarship will be made to the higher education agency of the teacher’s choice once proof of successful completion of first semester is provided to the NCCS Finance Department.
  • National Board Certification – Payment of the scholarship will be written to reimburse the employee for each component fee once proof of payment to the National Board for Professional Teacher Standards has been submitted to the NCCS Finance Department.
  • Regional, State or National Conferences – The teacher has the understanding that the he/she will share what was learned with others in the district to ensure district growth.
  • District Level Trainer– The teacher will plan with a District director to identify a specific area of need for a train the trainer model for the NCCS district.
