South Newton Students Win Poster Contest And Cash Prizes

IFFThree South Newton students were surprised today when Hani Nassar, Chair of the Hickory International Council, called out their names as winners of the 2016 International Film Festival poster contest! Jimena Teron Salazar, 4th grader, won 1st place in the 4th grade county-wide competition as well as sharing the Best Overall award with a Snow Creek Elementary 6th grader. Her cash prize was $250 dollars! In 5th grade, 1st place went to Natalie Mentaldo ($200 prize) and 2nd place went to Devan Ortega ($150 prize). The students were so excited that their creativity and artistic efforts paid off so nicely! The awards were presented on Wednesday, April 27, at the Newton-Conover Middle School Auditorium where South’s 4th and 5th graders were gathered to watch this year’s selection of international films. According to the mission of the Hickory International Council, the purpose of the council and the film festival is to highlight cultures outside of the United States and to offer positive ways to understand and accept our similarities and differences with people from other countries.

Congratulations, students, and thank you Mr. Nassar, Hickory International Council, and International Film Festival sponsors!
