The past three months have been very busy for the Autism team!! We have been working with the Autism Society of NC and the NC Autism team to help the teachers on the team become model classrooms after attending training, and building capacity this school year. The teachers have been developing skills and their ability support students in classrooms whom are on the Autism Spectrum. The remainder of the team is growing and developing skills to coach and support this process for the current year.
Our team meets regularly to debrief after the series training to discuss what we have learned, how the strategies can be implement into their own classroom, any questions, etc. and collaborative notes are shared during each training.
The goal of the Newton-Conover Autism Team is to build capacity within our schools by educating all staff on research-based best practices for serving students on the autism spectrum. After this series of training, our team will be doing a “Make and Take” session. We each will make an “Autism” tool box with different visuals and materials. Each school will have a box that the model teacher could implement and use to help teachers make more or let a teacher borrow some of the materials to see if it would work for a child before taking more time to make more resources.
