Are you looking for a way to encourage your students with summarizing information from text? The 5-3-1 strategy allows students to work independently, in pairs, as well as with a group to share their thoughts and ideas surrounding specific topics.
1. On their own, students think of 5 words or phrases related to what they learned (ex. from a book, an article, from a unit or lesson).
2. At their table, students share their ideas and pick 3 key ideas that best represent the group.
3. Then, the group narrows the ideas to 1 word that captures the essence of the 3 key ideas.
4. Each group shares their 1 word with the whole group.
