The Little Winner for The Little Read

Congratulations to first grader Joseph Canipe of North Newton Elementary! Joseph is this year’s NCCS winner of the essay contest for The Little Read. Joseph, a student in Kelly Pugh’s first grade classroom, is the son of Jessica Hymel.

The Little Read is a literacy program funded by a generous grant from the family of Ron and Sandra Deal in memory of their daughter Sara Catherine Deal Temple, a former reading teacher. The program is orchestrated by Lenoir Rhyne University and involves elementary students from all of the county’s schools. This year’s program is for first graders and focuses on the book Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend by Dan Santat. Program activities will include a presentation by the author, book signings and children’s games, and a theatrical performance by LRU playmakers. This year’s family day with be on Saturday, April 1st, beginning at 12noon in PE Monroe Auditorium.
