Learning Through Play

a teacher standing next to a table sandboxMrs. Fitzgerald from Shuford Elementary was an Innovative Grant recipient for the 2017-18 school year.  Her project provides more developmentally appropriate experiences in the kindergarten classroom by provided more opportunities for student-led explorations related to the standards.  According to The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), “nearly one-third (29 percent) of kindergarten classrooms spend 3 or more hours per day in teacher-directed, large group activities, and less than half (43 percent) of classrooms provide child-directed activity one or more hours per day”.  Through this project, students’ educational experience will be enhanced through a child-directed activity which includes student choice.  Students will also benefit because the additional learning format of play will be extended and continue to coincide with large and small group instruction.   For more information on how to incorporate learning through play, reach out to Shuford Elementary School.
