Mrs. Fitzgerald from Shuford Elementary was an Innovative Grant recipient for the 2017-18 school year. Her project provides more developmentally appropriate experiences in the kindergarten classroom by provided more opportunities for student-led explorations related to the standards. According to The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), “nearly one-third (29 percent) of kindergarten classrooms spend 3 or more hours per day in teacher-directed, large group activities, and less than half (43 percent) of classrooms provide child-directed activity one or more hours per day”. Through this project, students’ educational experience will be enhanced through a child-directed activity which includes student choice. Students will also benefit because the additional learning format of play will be extended and continue to coincide with large and small group instruction.
